On Thursday, July 17, 2003, racing legend John Surtees granted The Motorsport Collector a private autograph session before the start of the 2003 Brian Redman International Challenge at Road America where he was being honored as Grand Marshall.

Surtees signed the first US copies of a new book focusing on his career as a World Champion motorcycle rider along with a selection of die cast models of Formula One and Sports Cars driven to 4-wheel Championships in the 1960's.

In the late 1950's, John Surtees was the dominant rider in top-level British and European motorcycle racing. A precocious talent, he began riding competitively on Vincents in the early 1950's, then REGs and NSUs and Nortons. He swiftly established himself as one of the quickest and most determined competitors. He confirmed his outstanding qualities as a rider when he won his first 500cc title for MV Agusta in 1956, and this triumph was followed by six more titles, three at 350cc and three at 500cc. From 1958 to 1960, he was rarely beaten and usually he won by a huge margin.

This car was driven to victory by Surtees in the first-ever Canadian American Challenge Cup race in 1966. Surtees won the St Jovite Can Am in Quebec on September 11, 1966. Produced by GMP in a Limited Edition of 2,504, several examples were signed by Surtees for TMC at Road America.

In March of 2001, John Surtees made a rare US appearance to serve as Grand Marshall for the prestigious Amelia Island Concours in Florida.
