WALTER PAYTON
TRANS AM MUSTANG BODYWORK
PRACTICE CRASH - 1993 ROAD AMERICA
TRANS AM
After he retired from football, Chicago Bears legend
Walter Payton took up motor racing. The the NFL's greatest running
back became a partner in Dale Coyne's CART Indy Car team and drove
in various SCCA pro and amateur events.
While practicing for the 1993 Road America Trans Am
at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Payton survived a horrific accident
at one of the fastest sections of that 4 mile circuit. A car just
in front of Walter's Mustang suffered a mechanical failure and
slowed dramatically. Unable to maneuver, Payton rammed the back
of the disabled car and was launched into the air, flipping over
the guard rail and ending up - in flames - in a spectator area.
Thankfully, it was a practice day, the area was unoccupied and
no one was injured. Walter suffered minor burns but was essentially
OK. It was to be, however, his last professional racing appearance.
The bodywork pictured here was retrieved from the accident
scene. It carries Walter's familiar Number 34 and NFL markings.
It's a unique piece of memorabilia for a racing or football fan.
