A rare glimpse of post war European motoring conditions...rough, dusty unsurfaced roads, very little traffic, no crash hats, no Armco barriers, little support and rolled up sleeves!

Grand Prix 1949 Shell (28:05)
Another of the great Shell films from Director Bill Mason, and one his favourites. Made on a shoestring budget, with clockwork cameras, and a 78rpm record recorder housed in a large van, this film perfectly captures the atmosphere at this pioneer event on the old Silverstone airfield. It looks more like a poorly attended club meeting than an International Grand Prix. It is introduced with archive footage of early Grand Prix races, a hint of what was to come with Bill's brilliant "History of Motor Racing"series of Shell films.
