Shelby G.T. 350H

 

We've just received the terrific new Lane Automotive model of the hottest rental car ever produced, the Shelby Mustang GT 350-H. Back in 1966, 1,000 of these mildly disguised race cars were delivered to the Hertz Rent-a-Car company and could be thrashed about by the average business traveler for a mere $17 a day and $0.17 a mile.

The first 85 GT 350-H's were delivered with 4 speed transmissions, but after experiencing massive clutch replacement repairs Hertz requested the remaining cars be equipped with automatic transmissions. Legend has it that many of these cars were rented by drivers who would race them all weekend, then innocently return them on Monday morning with strange mechanical sounds coming from beneath the hood. There's never been a rent - a - racer like the Shelby GT 350-H!!

Most of the cars delivered to Hertz were in the distinctive black and gold livery reproduced in this excellent 1/18 scale model. The doors, hood and trunk lid all open, revealing a nicely detailed engine compartment, interior and trunk (with spare tire). The seat backs move back and forth and the underside of the Mustang is fully detailed with accurate suspension, duel exhaust and fuel tank. Near-Exoto quality at half the price!

Now, here's the kicker. The first batch of Lane Shelby GT350-H's were produced with a minor flaw: The Hertz 'H' was left off the rocker panel decal. The second run of this model will appear with the correct livery. Lane Automotive has asked distributors to return this 'error car' and since then, collectors have been grabbing them up at a rapid pace. TMC has a very small quantity of 'H'-less Shelby GT 350's in stock, first come first served.
