The Auto Union Team and the
Italian driver Tazio Nuvolari were very successful with the Type
D. He won the Grand Prix in Italy and Donnington (both in 1938)
and in 1939 the Grand Prix in Belgrade, which signaled the end
of an era. Also in 1939, Hermann Paul Muller won the French Grand
Prix with the Type D.
