1/18 Scale - Mercedes Benz W165
The most glamourous Grand Prix races
of the 30's took place in the North African city of Tripoli. Beginning
in 1934, this exotic paradise, an Italian Protectorate, hosted
a series of races which were dominated by the big engined Mercedes
'Silver Arrows'. For 1939, the organizers changed the regulations
at the last minute, setting a limit of 1.5 liter engines for all
races run under the Italian flag. This new rule effectively eliminated
the German cars from the Tripoli race, leaving it for Alfa Romeo
and Maserati to contest.
Auto Union did not enter Tripoli but,
working day and night in total secrecy, Mercedes engineers built
a pair of 1.5 liter 254 hp cars, designated the W165. Final preparations
were made on the second car while the transport ship was crossing
the Mediterranean. Gigi Villoresi captured the pole in his streamlined
Maserati but on race day (May 7, 1939), Hermann Lang made a tremendous
start in his W165 to take the lead from Villoresi and Mercedes
teammate Rudof Caracciolla. Lang's surprise entry stunned the
Italians, leading flag to flag to lead a Mercedes 1-2, a full
lap ahead of Villoresi's Maserati.
Sort of reminds you of the 1994 Indianapolis
500, doesn't it?
This model is hand assembled from 309
parts. Each wire wheel is hand twined with 30 steel wire spokes.
As you can see by the photos, the quality and detail are amazing.
