9/28/07 UPDATE: Hollywood legend Tony Curtis was in the Chicago area last weekend to emcee a screening of 'Some Like it Hot' at the Hollywood Boulevard Theatre. During the autograph session that preceeded the film, we asked Curtis to sign this original half-sheet theatre poster from his 1954 auto racing film 'Johnny Dark'. His response was an enthusiastic 'Boy, did I love making this picture'. We've returned the poster to its all acid free frame (UV resistant glass) and returned it to its place of honor here in our Downers Grove Gallery. SOLD
NEW BOOKS:
RACING SPORTS CARS: Memories of the Fifties
Top Drivers Remember Tracks and
Roads by Art Evans
A very personalized history of sports car racing during the 1950's.
The latest release from historian Art Evans combines more than
200 period photographs with the tall tales of more than 60 sports
car drivers - some world class racers, some not - as they recall
their experiences in the wild and wooly early days of American
road racing. This 274 page book consists of 50 chapters, each
dedicated to a different marque. Softbound. $39.95
FERRARI: Stories from Those Who Lived
the Legend
by John Lamm.
A great new 'coffee table' book for those of us who never get
tired of looking at great photography and those blood red cars
from Maranello. Photographer/Writer John Lamm, assisted by the
excellent book design work of Chuck Queener, tells the Ferrari
story through the words of the people who were instrumental in
creating the legend and mystique of the world's most famous marque.
It is a virtual oral history of Ferrari, with hundreds of historic
and modern day photographic images. Hardbound, 288 pages. This
book is scheduled to arrive in October, priced at $60.00. Reserve
your copy at TMC by Saturday, October 6 for just $49.95

9/21/07 UPDATE: Sorry for the lack of updates this week. Repairs to my primary computer are taking longer than I expected so I've switched back to my 'old reliable' 6 year old iMac 'lamp' to bring you up to date. First in line are two new books we expected back in July but just landed on our shores this week. After taking a quick look through each of them, I can strongly recommend both to those of us who are interested in Formula One history. We're offering both titles at special pricing for a limited time.

Spark is preparing another 'must have' item for all of us Can Am and Mark Donohue fans. It's a 1/43 scale miniature of the McLaren M6B campaigned by Penske Racing for Mark Donohue in the 1968 Canadian American Challenge Cup Series. After the 1967 season, Roger Penske purchased Bruce McLaren's Can Am Championship winning M6A and upgraded it to M6B and 'Sunoco Special' specs. Donohue dominated the 1968 US Road Racing Championship series (contested in the spring and summer as a 'tune up' for the 'Autumn Thunder' of the Can Am) with this car . In the mean time, Penske also purchased an unraced Team McLaren spare M6A, (installing a 427 Chevy engine) to use as Donohue's Can Am contender. With it's dark blue paint job and elegant pin striping, it was one of the most beautiful cars ever to compete in the series. Expected soon, reserve yours for $49.95 plus shipping. (Thanks to Road America Historian Tom Schultz for giving me the correct scoop on the Sunoco M6Bs.)

8/17/07 UPDATE: More than 20 new models (along with a few restocks) arrived from Minichamps, Spark and Bizarre today. Highlights include the models pictured above. From left: Bobby Rahal's Wolf WR1 as driven in the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal (1/43 Minichamps $39.95), Bruce McLaren's M6A Chevrolet as raced in the 1967 Can Am Series (1/43 Spark $49.95) and the Bruce McLaren/Phil Hill Ford GT in its first outing at the ADAC 1000km at the Nurburgring in 1964 (1/43 Bizarre $49.95). NEW DVDs:

LeMANS: IN THE LAP OF THE GODS
Want to know what it's really like for a small team to compete
with the factories at LeMans? TMC is importing this award winning
behind the scenes documentary following the efforts of privateer
racer Martin Short as he attempts to make his dream of a podium
finish in the 24 Hours of LeMans a reality. Independent film maker
John Matthews was allowed unprecedented access by Short and the
LeMans organizers to chronicle the hour by hour story of this
courageous effort. Experience 200 mph speeds on Mulsanne with
dramatic on board footage and tense pit stop action in this terrific
two part, 90 minute film. $34.95. First shipment due late
August.
TALES OF THE RAT FINK
Fun biographical documentary of the 'World's Greatest Kustom Car
Builder' Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. 'Big Daddy' never thought
of his creations simply as shells of molded sheet metal or fiberglass.
He always wanted you to see the engine too, because the only American
Art Form - the Automobile - is not an object. It's a kineticism.
It's materials are speed, momentum, excitement and freedom. The
voices of John Goodman, Ann-Margret, Jay Leno, Brian Wilson, Matt
Groening, Tom Wolfe, Steve Austin, Robert Williams, Paul LeMat,
Billy F. Gibbons and The Smothers Brothers help bring this 'Animentary'
(animated documentary) to life. 76 minutes. $19.95. In
Stock.

MINICHAMPS 1/18 SCALE
MASERATI GHIBLI
One of the most beautiful road car diecasts we've ever seen is
this 1/18 scale 1969 Maserati Ghibli in Blue Metallic with a Tan
interior. If you missed it the first time, an encore shipment
is expected to arrive from Minichamps this fall. $84.95.

'FANGIO' by ALAN FEARNLEY
- NOW SIGNED BY STIRLING MOSS!
'Pairings' of autographs on items can be very important in terms
of future value. In other sports, it could mean Ruth and Gehrig
together on a baseball or Bird and Magic together on a basketball.
In motorsports, the signatures of Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling
Moss would rate near the top of any all-time list of desirable
'pairings'. Although Fangio passed way in 1995, there is still
a chance for you to aquire a dramatic piece of artwork signed
by these two all time greats.
In 1990, this Alan Fearnley painting, entitled 'Fangio', was published in a Limited Edition of 500 signed and numbered prints. It commemorated Fangio's victory in the 1955 Argentine Grand Prix. Each copy was hand signed by Juan Manuel Fangio at that year's Monaco Grand Prix. Recently, Stirling Moss has added his signature to a small quantity of these already highly desireable prints. They are now available for $1,000.00 plus shipping.

PENSKE RACING TEAM: 40
YEARS OF EXCELLENCE by ALAN HUMMEL
Winners of more than 250 major races of all types and disciplines
over the past 40 years, Team Penske has been one of the most dominant
influences in the development, growth and direction of auto racing
in the United States as both a sport and a business. Hummel, who
grew up near Penske's original shops in Newton Square, PA, has
been following the exploits of Penske Racing since the late 60s
along with his father, a long time Sun Oil employee. In this book,
he documents the fascinating history of this unique organization,
focusing on the talented drivers and innovative engineering that
have been responsible for the team's spectacular and enduring
success. The book also highlights the key events that have defined
American motorsports during this timeframe, including the rise
and fall of US sports car racing in the 1960s and 1970s, the politics
of the USAC-CART split in the late 1970s and the CART-IRL battle
that unfolded 20 years later, and the phenomenal transformation
of NASCAR from its moonshine roots into the mainstream commercial
phenomenon that it is today. 272 pages, 125 color photos, 95 black
and white photos. Hardbound. $44.95 Due to arrive next
week.
Photos of some new pieces from Spark are now available HERE.
Lots more great stuff coming in the next few weeks. Stop back on Friday and Saturday for information on new diecast arrivals from Spark, Bizarre and Minichamps - including a 1/43 scale Wolf WR1 driven by Bobby Rahal in the 1978 Canadian Grand Prix.

8/14/07 UPDATE: The question we were asked most at the Road America ALMS race last weekend was "where are the 1/18 R10's?" Well, here they are! And are they spectacular! Spark's 1/18 scale resin Audi R10 2006 LeMans winner ($119.95) arrived today, complete with a handsome presentation box. More photos HERE and more Spark and Minichamps new arrivals later today.
Thursday and Friday watch for additional postings to our New DieCast page as we catch up on what arrived while we were at Elkhart. A significant shipment from Spark and Bizarre (more than 20 new pieces) is expected later this week. Stop by on Saturday from 10am to 3pm for the best selection.
EAGLE BOOK UPDATE: We expect to have unsigned copies of 'Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars' ($75.00) in stock by the weekend. We hope to make an announcement regarding signed copies later this week, but if all you require is an unsigned book, let us know by emailing us HERE and we'll get a copy right out to you.

8/4/07 UPDATE: An advance copy of John Zimmermann's eagerly awaited 'Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars' arrived here yesterday. From what we can see, slowly flipping through 208 pages of pure gold, is a long overdue tribute to Gurney and his band of engineers, designers, fabricators, mechanics, drivers, staff and family. It's an important chronicle of the Formula One, Indianapolis, IMSA, SCCA and USAC winning machines that emerged from a non-descript building in a quiet industrial park in Santa Ana, California.
In other words, if you are a fan of road racing or Indianapolis racing in the 60s, 70s, 80s and/or 90s, your library will not be complete without a copy of this book.
Our first shipment of 'Dan Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars' ($75.00) is due to arrive in a couple of weeks. As many of you know, we've had several conversations with the Author and the staff at AAR regarding signed books. While we are still working out the logistics, we hope to make an announcement regarding the specifications, cost and delivery date for signed books by the middle of the month. Watch this space or sign up for our Email Updates for further information.
PLEASE NOTE: Everyone
who has a copy of 'Dan
Gurney's Eagle Racing Cars' on pre-order
with TMC will be given first priority on an 'upgrade' to a signed
copy as soon as the details are worked out.

8/3/07 UPDATE: Visitors from Argentina have introduced us to a spectacular selection of books (and one DVD) that tell the story of motor racing and a love of fine automobiles in South America. Check them out HERE!

8/2/07 UPDATE: New from
Auto Art's 1/18 scale Millennium Collection is the Ford GT LM
Spec II Test Car with a cool carbon fibre finish ($109.95)
In stock. More photos on the New Die
Cast page. Also, restocks on Auto Art's 1/18 1991 LeMans winning
Mazda 787B ($149.95) and the Longtail Gulf Porsche 917
($94.95) that was released last month.
