- SORRY, SIGNED COPIES SOLD OUT -

6/2/08 UPDATE: After returning from Indianapolis, we were offered the opportunity to participate in a celebration of the 30th Anniversary of Rick Mears's first Indy Car victory at the Milwaukee Mile last weekend.

Mears, driving a Penske PC6 - Cosworth won the 1978 Rex Mays 150 just a few weeks after being named co-Rookie of the Year at Indianapolis to begin a brilliant career at Penske Racing which included 2 CART Championships and 4 Indianapolis 500 victories.

After Indy Car qualifying Saturday afternoon, Rick was the guest of honor at a question and answer session at the Indy Downforce Fan Zone. After the session, Rocket Rick spent more than an hour signing autographs in a nearby tent where a restored Eagle-Offy Indy car, driven by Mark Donohue at Indy in 1973 and by Rick in his first Indy attempt a few years later was also on display.

We were invited to supply Gordon Kirby's new book 'Rick Mears - Thanks' to the autograph session. Hundreds of fans lined up to meet Rick, to get an autograph, relate a fond memory or just to shake his hand.

The 4-time Indianapolis 500 Winner seemed to enjoy every minute.

After the last fan had had been taken care of, Rick and Gordon graciously signed our remaining stock of books and posed for a few photos. It was one of the most enjoyable autograph sessions we've ever participated in. Thanks to Rick Mears, Gordon Kirby, the management and staff of the Milwaukee Mile and the Indy Racing League Fan Zone for the opportunity.

While supplies last, we are making those signed books available at no additional charge to TMC customers. $39.95 plus shipping.

Rick Mears and Gordon Kirby (seated) along with the TMC signing crew at Milwaukee last Saturday.

Rick Mears now works quietly behind the scenes as Team Penske's driver coach. In the Winners Circle Sunday afternoon, Ryan Briscoe thanked Rick for the guidance he has received from him and humbly reflected on the fact that his first Indy Car victory took place on the 30th anniversary of a similar feat by such a great Champion.

4/23/08 UPDATE: We have assembled an impressive selection of 'one off' type items from around the Gallery and have posted them to a new Private Collection page. Most are recent arrivals. In the Collection are several Fangio, Ferrari, Lauda and Moss related items of interest to serious collectors. Take a look!

4/21/08 UPDATE: First Graham Rahal, now Danica Patrick. As we head in to the Month of May, the future of Open Wheel Racing in the United States hasn't looked this bright since the mid-1990s. Congratulations to Danica on her breakthrough victory in Japan over the weekend. Long time TMC customers may recall that we were among the first 'fan sites' on the web to predict a great future for the Illinois born and bred driver. We posted a story on Danica way back in 2000, when she drove a smart, conservative race to score the highest finish ever for an American in the famous Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch (second, behind F1 driver-to-be Anthony Davidson). You can still find our original story HERE.

4/16/08 UPDATE: Carousel 1's latest Kurtis Roadster has arrived. It's the Merz Engineering Special driven by Fred Agabashian in the 1954 Indianapolis 500. $139.95 plus shipping. You can place your order HERE.

4/10/08 UPDATE: CMC has released some tentative arrival dates for their impressive 2008 lineup. You'll find everything in the CMC Advance Orders section of Online Shopping. In a nutshell, we'll see Porsche 911s in the summer, Sharknose Ferraris in the Fall and the Testa Rossa at year end. The Rosemeyer Auto Union (above) is due late summer and the the Lang Mercedes W165 (below) in mid summer.

We're expecting the Fred Agabashian Kurtis Roadster from Carousel 1 early next week. They've cut back on production this year, so early sellouts are a possibility.

4/9/08 UPDATE: GMP has released a set of photos of the 'first sample' version of their forthcoming 1/18 scale Ferrari 330 P4.

Talk about impressive! Check out the engine and wiring detail in the photo shown here.

The 1/18 scale P4 will be constructed from more than 700 separate parts.

GMP has announced a $269.95 price, but the detail here seems equal to models priced above $300. Each replica will be individually numbered. A July 2008 release is expected.

We've posted larger versions of the entire photo set HERE, or you can place your order on the Secure Online Shopping section of our website HERE.

A giant 1/8 scale Ferrari 330 P4 is being produced under GMP's Real Art Replicas brand. Details HERE.

4/7/08 UPDATE: First off - Congratulations to the Rahal Family on the occasion of Graham's record breaking victory in St Petersburg yesterday!

Last Saturday, Shadow and Ti22 CanAm Designer Peter Bryant visited The Motorsport Collector to sign copies of his highly acclaimed new biography 'Can Am Challenger'.

After the signing, Peter gave a fascinating presentation to TMC Customers and Can Am enthusiasts with a personal review of his career in motor racing and some of the engineering and aerodynamic theory put into practice in the Can Am as well as on modern day Formula One cars.

The presentation and 'war stories' didn't end until well past midnight. A good time was had by all.

Signed copies of 'Can Am Challenger' are still available for $49.95 plus shipping. Click on the title to order.

Can Am Challenger by Peter Bryant:

Raised in a working class family in wartime London, Peter Bryant left school at an early age to become a breadwinner for the household as an apprentice mechanic in the postwar motor trade. After a weekend trip to Goodwood for a non-championship Formula One race, the 16 year old fell in love with motor racing. Peter started as a fabricator at Colin Chapman's Lotus workshop, then freelanced as a racing mechanic for several teams before joining the Grand Prix circus with Reg Parnell. An offer from Mickey Thompson brought Bryant to the US in 1964. After a stint with Carroll Shelby's growing empire, Peter became a Can Am regular, first with the Dana Chevrolet team, then with Carl Haas before moving on to design and build the Titanium Ti22 and Shadow Can Am cars. Bryant, now a very young 71 years old, works as an Engineering Consultant to the automotive industry. If you are interested in the Can Am, this book is a must-read.

4/2/08 UPDATE: Due to popular demand, Spark Model has announced additional production of several of their most popular items. Here are a few of our favorites:

The 1959 Ecurie Ecosse Transporter, pictured above, disappeared from our shelves pretty quickly last year. We've been asking for more ever since. It's great that at least one manufacturer listens to their customers. $116.95, click the link to order.

Dan Gurney's 1962 Daytona Continental winning Arciero Lotus 19B-Climax (at left) never made it to our website last time. This was the car that took the checkered flag under gravity (and starter motor) power in the first of the great World Championship sports car races at Daytona. $49.95 plus shipping.

Maybe the most impressive of all is the 1/43 scale replica of the Land Speed Record holding Thrust SSC, pictured below. More than 15 inches long, Spark's Thrust SSC would be an impressive addition to any collection. On October 13, 1997, RAF Squadron Leader Andy Green became the first driver to break the sound barrier while still on the ground. Two days later, on October 15, Sir Richard Noble's wildest creation set the current Land Speed Record, reaching a speed of 783.035 - or Mach 1.02 - in Nevada's Black Rock Desert with Green at the controls. Spark's resin replica of Thrust SSC is priced at $175.00. Reserve now.

We'll be posting information on other Spark 'encores' by the weekend.

4/1/08 UPDATE: Big changes are coming to The Motorsport Collector next week. We're going to an 'All NASCAR All The Time' lineup of Limited Edition, licensed merchandise from such great drivers as Jimmy Johnson and Kyle Busch. We're excited and we hope you are too. Details HERE!
